Halloween Safety Tips from Woolwich Community Health Centre

Halloween is a time of excitement for families and children across our community. At Woolwich Community Health Centre, we want to ensure your Halloween is filled with treats and fun and that everyone has a safe experience. Here are some Halloween safety tips to help keep your little goblins and ghosts safe.

1. Choose the Right Costume

When selecting Halloween costumes, safety is key:

- Fire Safety: Avoid costumes with long capes, baggy sleeves, or other flowing fabrics that could catch fire. Look for nylon or heavyweight polyester costumes, as they’re less likely to ignite.

- Visibility: Choose bright costumes or add reflective tape to help children be visible to drivers. Use face paint instead of masks for better vision and breathing. If face paint is used, always do a patch test to check for allergic reactions.

- Safety and Fit: Costumes should fit well to prevent tripping. Avoid oversized costumes, long pieces, or rigid accessories that could lead to falls or injuries. For cooler weather, make sure costumes fit over warm clothing.

2. Avoid Danger When Decorating

Halloween decorations bring festive joy but can also pose risks if not handled carefully.

- Jack-o’-Lantern Safety: Let kids draw designs on pumpkins, but leave the carving to adults. For safety, consider using a small flashlight or battery candle instead of open flame candles.

- Fire Hazards: Keep all candles, matches, and other fire sources out of children’s reach. Avoid Halloween candles with multiple wicks, as they can produce large flames.

- Outdoor Safety: Check your home’s outdoor areas and remove any tripping hazards. Turn on outdoor lights to help trick-or-treaters find their way safely.

3. Stay Secure While Trick-or-Treating

Help your children stay visible and safe during trick-or-treating.

- Parental Guidance: Go with your children until they’re old enough to go with friends. Equip each child with a flashlight and have them stay in well-lit areas.

- Street Safety: Remind children to cross streets at corners, never between parked cars. Encourage them to visit only homes with outdoor lights on and to never enter homes or vehicles.

4. Be Cautious with Candy and Toys

Before the excitement of treats begins, remember these tips:

- Inspect Treats: Check all treats before letting your children eat them. Avoid giving small toys to young children and watch for choking hazards such as hard or chewy candies and nuts.

For a safe and enjoyable Halloween, follow these simple tips and share them with others. If you have any questions about Halloween safety or need more information, visit Canada's website below. Let’s make Halloween a safe and fun celebration for everyone in the community.
